Many yorkies (mine included) can suffer from what my vet calls the "reverse sneeze" which sounds and looks like a severe asthma attack. However, gum disease is yorkies leads to heart and kidney failure so it's worth it. We do it once a year and it's about $300-$400 per dog. Dental cleanings at the vet are a must and can be pricey. Tooth loss and gum disease is very common and can be deadly if not treated/controlled. Luxating patella (slipping kneecap) is very common and can only be fixed with surgery. There are some medical issues common to the yorkie breed. Definately provide rawhide chewies for them, they love to chew and it will do wonders for their teeth.)Ĥ. They don't imact in their teeth and add fiber to their diet. Instead of dog treats, they get baby carrots. For the both of them, it only costs about $35 a month. I leave them potty pads but they've never needed them. They stay inside for about 6-7 hours during the day while I'm at work. They go out to play in the morning and then several times in the evening. I have found that my two prefer several short periods of activity. I have a fenced yard so I don't walk them daily. ![]() I keep my two clipped very short so I only brush them once a week because they like it so much (start brushing them when they're VERY young). I've had them since they were 8 weeks old. I have two that will be ten years old in a couple of months.
